Waldeck, Hesse - Waldeck is a small town of about 8,000 inhabitants in northern Hesse, dominated by an imposing castle overlooking the valley of the Eder river and the Edersee and first mentioned in 1120. It was the residence of the counts of Waldeck who, beginning around 1200, gradually gathered a sizeable realm under the control and, through inheritance having added the county of Pyrmont to their holdings, were elevated to princes of Waldeck-Pyrmont in 1712.
